Story: BROKEN…. Episode 6 | Written by Ifeoluwa Oni

Pastor Kay decided to talk to Tito immediately the policemen left. He knocked on the door and he heard a response from inside before going in.
“Come in.” answered Tito from within. As she saw him entering, she greeted him, “Welcome sir.”
“Thank you Tito. How is your health?”
“Fine sir.” He sat on a chair by the bed side.
“Hope you are feeling better now.”
She nodded and responded, “Yes sir.”
“Glory be to God.” She only nodded without saying anything.
“It is well dear, I want you to know that there is a reason for this occurrence.”
“Why did God allow this happen to me? I served God with the whole of my heart. How could he have sat down up there, watching that beast rape me? I regret serving Him.”
“Stop the blasphemy, God does not do evil. He allowed that for a reason. Your mother made me to understand that she warned you of the forthcoming doom and she warned you to fast and not go out that day the incidence happened. Had it been you obeyed your mum, this wouldn’t have happened to you.”
“She warned me not to go and I was fasting that day. But he called me that he was seriously sick and would need me to buy him a drug as there is no one he could send and his friend was not around. I decided to go because I thought he was dying. Even the bible made us to understand that we should cater for one another, ‘I was sick, and you cared for me.’ When one serve others you are doing the same thing for Christ. Just like Jesus had compassion for others, we are to have compassion as well. What would you do if you were in my position, to cater for the sick or to leave them alone dying? “
He smiled to himself, “I get what you are trying to say Tito but we as Christians should take everything to God in prayer first. Tito, had it been you prayed before going, this wouldn’t have happened. I know you wanted to fulfill your obligation as a Christian to tend to the sick and that was why you neglected your mother’s warning because you felt you should take God first. My dear, prayer is the ultimate thing. Had it been you prayed, God would have warned you not to go but you pushed God aside thinking you were also doing His work. Even if you want to embark on God’s mission, you are to pray before doing it.”
“Are you blaming me now?” she asked with teary eyes.
“I am not blaming you, I am just trying to tell you all these in case of another time.”
“It will never happen to me again.”
“Tito, I am not saying it will happen to you again. Just ask for God’s forgiveness for disobeying your mum and also beg your mum to forgive you.”
“I can never forget this occurrence, it has now become a part of my life.”
“Every time you feel that your heart is breaking under the weight of what happened to you, just ask God to help you.” He looked at her to see if she was listening to him, and he saw that she was listening, he then continued. “Do you know that God is extremely tender to victims?” he waited for her response but when none was coming and he saw it in her face that she was not sure of what to say, he asked her, “You don’t know the answer?”
She shook her head, which Pastor Kay took for a ‘No’.
“God is extremely tender to victims. You were victimized and afflicted. God cares for you. He cares about your experience of great stress and evil. God is your redeemer, no matter how awful the attack was. He is able to redeem terrible wrongs and make them right. ‘He heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds.’ He is able to redeem you.”
“Thank you sir for your words of encouragement, the Lord will continue to increase your anointing.”
“Amen ma’am.”
“Stop using ma’am for me sir.” She smiled weakly.
“Alright ma’am.” They both burst into laughter.
“You are still using ma’am for me sir.”
“I won’t use it again. I also want you to know that Rape is a life-changing event. I will give you some points that rape victims typically suffer and struggle:
 Anger: it is a sure thing that you would be angry at the event that took place. For the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God. Sometimes, you would feel the urge to revenge but God has made it clear to us that we should never take our own revenge, but we should leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY,’ says the Lord.
 Hatred: you will feel hatred especially to the person that did this to you. Have this at the back of your mind that bitterness and hatred can become all-consuming and destructive. Hatred for another may destroy you as it won’t allow you to move forward. My dear, please, let go of your hatred and let God fight for you. Do not dwell on the negative, it will only make matters worse. Seek reconciliation and you should forgive. The person who store hate in their heart for someone is walking in darkness.
 Fear: there are tendencies that you would be filled with all kinds of fear, you may not feel safe being alone. Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
 Relationships: you will have a hard time trusting people, fear of going into a relationship with the opposite sex.
 Shame: although you were the victim, you will feel shameful and unclean.
 Regret: you will definitely regret your actions, “Had I known”, ‘if only I hadn’t been in that place’, ‘I should have stayed back’…….. and lots more.
 Depression: life can seem meaningless after you have suffered in the hands of the criminal.
 Addiction: you may try to forget what happened to you by using different types of measures- drugs, alcohol, food, watching films.

“I want to forget this trauma, how can that be possible?”
“You need to face what happened to you. This attack is now part of your life, there is nothing anybody can do to erase it, what you only need to do, is to live beyond it. Tito, live beyond your past.
Secondly, invite Jesus into your struggle. Whenever you are struggling with your past, call on God because God is a very present help in trouble. God also told us in Isaiah 43:2 that ‘When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire, you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. Say it loud whenever you are wallowing in self-pity. This is God’s promise to every of his child. Pour out your heart to Him every day and I am sure that He would tend to your case if you do it in faith.”
“Thank you so much sir, you are a blessing to me.”
He rose up, “I have to get going now, I promise to come back tomorrow, I will come in company of my wife.”
“Alright sir. I will be expecting you both sir.”
Pastor Kay prayed with her for like ten minutes before he finally left. When Pastor Kay got to the reception, he met Tito’s parents and her uncle, he told them that he was going. The three of them went inside the room, Tito asked for her parent’s forgiveness for disobeying them. They all reconciled, Tito was left alone to rest.
They were tortured seriously before they later confessed. Some of her things were collected at his place. Her school identity card, Bible and wrist watch were found lying at the back of a settee, they had probably fallen off from her bag when they were rushing to dispose her body. They were yet to be disposed, he kept the items at the back of the settee in the living room.
These items were collected by the policemen as evidence from his place.
Tolu sat in a corner in the cell they were put, he was in tears. Toyese went to meet him at the corner he was sitting.
“Abeg guy, no dey fall my hand nau. Why you dey cry on top this small matter? U be small pikin?”
“Make una shut up. I never bargained to live the rest of my life in a cell. I warned you before all these happened. Why did you lure me into this? I shouldn’t have listened to you when you told me to do that. What mess have I gotten myself into?”
“You are a big fool, I didn’t lure you into anything. You only did what you felt was right.”
The next day, Pastor Kay visited Tito with his wife, Sandra, they spent close to two hours.
“Tito, I want you to know that God is ever ready to hear your pleas. Make Him your best friend, your confidant. Be ever ready to pour your heart to Him. He will proffer solution to your problem. I know of a girl who was raped, after the incidence, she started offering her body to every man who makes it known to her that he wants to have her. She grew wild, no one was able to tame her. She said where was God when she was raped. She left God. Lo and behold, during one of her escapades with men, this particular man took her to his house which was so quiet. Unknown to her, the man was in a cult, the man wanted to offer her as a sacrifice. Tito, she was saved by Grace alone. She was saved but one of her eyes was damaged, she can only see with one eye. She retraced her steps back to God, till today, she is still serving God with her might. Despite her past, she found an ideal husband who married her. The man loves her even with one eyes, he never saw that as a barrier not to marry her. She was embittered by what happened to her but God was not tired of her case, he brought her back to himself. But dear, it is not everyone that can be that lucky. Not everyone will be given the chance to retrace their steps. Tito dear, Jesus died for all mankind and He died for you too. Do not wallow in self-pity and do not be a shadow of yourself because of what happened to you.
My life is indeed another testimony, I have been written off by a lot of people that I could never do something good in my life again but God disappointed them all. I met Christ through a friend. By knowing Christ, my life became better. Here I am today, I am a living testimony. The Lord is your strength dear. It is well with you.”
“Amen, thank you so much ma. You are indeed Pastor Kay’s better half, you both really complement each other.”
“You can say that again. That is why she is my wife.” Pastor Kay said.
Some hours after they met, Tito’s roommates came visiting. They stayed with her for some hours before they left.
Tade visited her immediately he returned from Adankan village.
“Tito, I can’t believe that this really happened to you. And I warned you seriously about this guy. Imagine this now, your life is in total mess now.”
“Tade, this is not what you should be saying now. I already learnt my lesson in a hard way.”
“Indeed, you really learnt it in a hard way. What will become of your life now?” Tito’s mouth dropped in surprise with the way Tade was talking. “You have spoilt your life, I wonder what you want to do now. How are we even sure now that you are not in any way infected. Which guy in his right frame of mind will marry a girl that was raped?”
“You just said your mind, Tade, I am highly disappointed in you. I never expected this from you. I expected that you would tell me encouraging words, instead of letting your words weigh me down.”
“Had it been I never warned you, it would have been a better case. Tito, I don’t think I want to continue this relationship. I don’t know what you have contacted.”
“Tade, thank you so much. There is nothing I have to say, God be with you.”
Tade left the hospital room and Tito bursted out crying, his words really did hurt her but what could she do? She cried and cried before she finally slept off.
